El Cardenal has been around for generations, and it offers traditional Mexican cuisine, but with elegant ingredients, artistic preparation and exquisite presentation. Menus are revised monthly to take advantage of the best vegetables, fruits and fish that are in season. Gorditas hidalguenses are popular choice by loyal locals. Also the aporreado con huevo. “Escamoles,” a form of Mexican-style caviar, is a delicacy, served at breakfast with eggs in a tortilla or at lunch in a casserole for making tacos. Moles from the state of Oaxaca is another favorite menu item, as well as the traditional enchiladas.
Do not fail to order the hot chocolate for starters at breakfast or lunch. It is delicious and served from a large jug. The sweet rolls and other fresh baked goods will be tempting, too, especially in the morning as they come out of the oven. The wait staff are all fluent in English. There is also a kids’ play area in a courtyard nearby. The appointments of the restaurant are tasteful, with earth tones and leather accents.
