Fonda el Refugio
Fonda el Refugio offers visitors a tour through all the high spots of Mexican gastronomy: Starters include guacamole, of course, and quesadillas, sopes, tacos, enchiladas and tostadas. Soups abound. Then move to a pork, chicken or beef dish, with such standbys as chicharron en salsa verde, chiles rellenos, loganiza en salsa verde, pollo adobado, puntas de filete, carne asada (with rajas and frijoles or a la tampiqueña), or the signature Filet Fonda el Refugio. You can order red snapper a la Veracruzana, one of Mexico’s heritage dishes, and other seafood delights. Mole poblano, manchamanteles and albóndigas en chipotle are also on the menu. A full array of Mexican deserts tops off the menu.
The surroundings are casual and elegant at the same time. The décor includes Mexican folk art and culinary artifacts from previous times. The Fonda el Refugio is an excellent choice for a romantic dinner or for a meal to accompany lively conversation. It is best to come early, especially on weekend evenings.
