Xpu Ha Mexico
Xpu Ha is a Mexican village known for its miles-long stretch of natural, white-sand beach. Located almost exactly between Playa del Carmen to the north and Tulum to the south (20 miles either way), Xpu Ha is a perfect location for those wishing to stay out of the faster-paced tourist destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Because the beach is in many parts left to its own environs, (i.e. not raked) some sections are peppered with rock and seaweed. Still, many silky stretches of white-sand are found in front of the hotels located on the shores of Xpu Ha. Hotel and beach access points are easily found by following the signs along Highway 307. Visitors should note that all beaches in Mexico are public, but the palapas, chairs, and umbrellas are private property belonging to the hotels. Feel free to visit any beach that you want to - just bring your own gear.
Nautically, Xpu Ha is 23 miles west of Cozumel and the Caribbean sea in between is prime snorkeling, diving, and kite-boarding territory. Visitors to Xpu Ha can take advantage of the dive and kite-boarding shops, where beginning divers or kite-boarders can sign up for lessons or hire guides to escort them to nearby coral reefs and cenotes.
Attractions surrounding Xpu Ha are plentiful and include the Mayan ruins at Tulum, the botanical gardens of Puerto Aventuras, and many sights offered via Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Traveling to any of these attractions is relatively easy and inexpensive. Colectivos (usually a mini-van transport; sometimes called a combi) run from Cancun to Playa del Carmen then from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, and back, all-day long. Colectivo stands are dotted along the highway, and you’ll easily find one going your way. Hotels may offer shuttle service to popular locations as well.
Amazingly, while there are several hotels in the area, some all-inclusive, the village of Xpu Ha itself has only 2 full-time inhabitants, and one dwelling occupied year-round. Xpu Ha was placed on the map by hoteliers who recognized the areas fine beaches, snorkeling, and diving attributes, and built their hotels to draw in and accommodate tourists. Dining options include hotel restaurants, or the myriad of restaurants along the highway. Fresh seafood, as well as good Mexican cuisine, can be found at most locations.
