Zipolite Mexico

Zipolite is truly the best backpackers paradise in Mexico. There are no large hotels here with air conditioning, swimming pool, or cable TV. Just the bare minimum for those who are determined to escape the 9 to 5 rat race of civilization.

There are so many great things I could say about Zipolite, from the laid back attitude of the Europeans who fill the beach to the inexpensive carefree lifestyle that has attracted its share of x-patriots from around the world. However, as is so often the case, there is a down side. The under-tows, rip-tides, and strong currents claim far too many tourists.

Zipolite Mexico is most famous for having the only "officially sanctioned" nude beach in Mexico. This tends to attract nudists, naturists, sun worshipers, and at least one perv a week with a camera and no life.

The thing Zipolite is famous for (second only to the nude beach) is the 60's style drug scene. You will see people smoking a joint on the beach, but they will probably be the ones who get cought by the plain clothes police when they come to the beach. So if you do it, be sure to have around $200 MXP per person for the "fine" you will be charged. -- Just telling it the way it is, no judgement. In the US you would end up in jail and a much larger fine. For something that most people in the US think should be legalized, I think Mexico's way of dealing with small infractions is far more civil.

When all is said and done, Zipolite Mexico is still a great place to visit. Just beware of the deadly currents, and remember to keep your valuables locked up and out of the hands of thieves.
